The CM Trailer Parts 50mm High Rise Euro Towball & Locking Plate is the mandatory fitment for European caravans equipped with AL-KO AKS stabiliser couplings. Designed specifically for New Zealand fixed tongue towbars (75mm wide), the high rise design positions the ball 25mm higher than a standard towball to achieve the correct coupling geometry required by AL-KO and other European stabiliser systems.

The included locking plate is an essential safety component that prevents the towball nut from loosening when the coupling is engaged. Rated to 3500kg, this kit is suitable for the vast majority of European caravans sold in New Zealand.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Mandatory fitment for caravans with AL-KO AKS stabiliser couplings
  • 50mm ball diameter for European coupling compatibility
  • 25mm higher than a standard towball for correct coupling geometry
  • Locking plate prevents the towball nut from loosening while towing
  • Designed for NZ fixed tongue towbars (75mm wide)
  • Includes towball and locking plate

Important: The towball nut must be tightened to 220Nm torque to ensure no ball movement. Due to the steel type required for AL-KO AKS grip, minor surface rust on the ball and shaft can occur. If this happens, a coat of paint on the shaft is recommended — but do not paint the ball head as this affects stabiliser friction.

Why do I need a high rise towball for my European caravan?

European caravans fitted with AL-KO AKS stabiliser couplings require a 50mm high rise towball to achieve the correct coupling angle and height geometry. Using a standard-height towball can prevent the stabiliser from engaging correctly and may void the coupling warranty.

What is the locking plate for?

The locking plate fits over the towball nut and prevents it from rotating and loosening while the coupling is in use. It is an essential safety component that should always be fitted.

What towbars is this compatible with?

This towball is designed specifically for New Zealand fixed tongue towbars with a 75mm wide tongue. It is not suitable for all towbar types — confirm your towbar tongue width before purchasing.

What torque should the nut be tightened to?

The towball nut must be tightened to 220Nm torque to ensure there is no ball movement while towing. Under-torquing can allow the ball to rotate, which is a serious safety hazard.

Will this suit a Dexter or Trojan stabiliser coupling?

This towball is designed primarily for AL-KO AKS stabiliser systems. Compatibility with other stabiliser types should be confirmed with your coupling manufacturer before use.

Why does the towball get surface rust?

The steel alloy used for this towball is chosen for its grip properties required by the AL-KO AKS stabiliser head. This alloy is more susceptible to surface rust than chrome-plated towballs. If rust appears, paint the shaft only — never paint the ball head as this will reduce stabiliser friction and braking performance.
